Return of the Amityville Horror

General Discussion About Anything Amityville And Other Paranormal Topics

Is anybody at all surprised that this documentary was a let-down?

I have not seen it so really I cannot comment from a position of knowledge of someone who has, however based on previous experience I can only imagine and, based on comments of those who have viewed it, that it is a load of tripe!

Personally I think it is designed to bait people into viewing it - just mention Amityville and they will come!

At a bit of a stretch it would be somewhat amusing to discover that some bored producers have used Amityville to advertise a second-rate paranormal documentary, then come on here and view the comments for kicks.

I don't understand how they used the "ghost boy" photo without violating copyright laws. Likewise, I don't understand how they used the name "The Amityville Horror" without violating copyright laws. From what I've always heard here, the reason George could not get out his real version of what happened in the 28 days was because he sold his rights to the name "The Amityville Horror" and could no longer use it. Also, I undestood tht Geoege was very protective of the use of the "ghost boy" photo? (Even though it was the Warren's photo?).

“I want no part of the world out there. As far as I’m concerned, out there, there is nothing but trouble, disease, animals. I want no part of the world. In here at night when we lock in, they lock us in the cells. I feel safe, that nobody is going to get me. I feel fine. I really like that…..” RJD, JR.,October 15, 1975

Good questions. Wish I had an answer.

The ghost boy photo appears on quite a few shows. It's shown during History's Mysteries, and on at least one (maybe both) of those UK docs ("The Real Amityville Horror" and "The True Story: The Amityville Horror"). I also think they show it during that Primetime Live piece and possibly in the TV Land Myths and Legends episode.

When these people are given the rights to show the photo, I wonder if it's just a verbal agreement, or if they actually sign a release for each photo.

If they sign a release, I wonder what the wording is. Perhaps the wording allows them to use the photos not only in the specific show that they are working on, but also on any future shows they may do about the subject.

I really don't know -- just thinking out loud. But perhaps they were able to get the rights from another source. Or even possibly from Lorraine? Or maybe from George's estate?

Or maybe they didn't get permission at all.

Regarding the trademark on "The Amityville Horror," wouldn't that fall under "fair usage" in this case?

Yeah, I just saw this and I have to admit that it sucked. The investigations themselves were completely boring and as far as I'm concerned had nothing to do with Amityville. I do like the fact that they at least weren't calling it a hoax. I am soo sick of hearing the hoax crap. At least the investigators supported the Amityville home as being haunted.
