My visit to Amityville, October 6th, 2010

So I went, I finally went. I arrived in this wonderful little town early in the morning, and I was actually left almost alone to walk the streets. I had a great time, I walked down Broadway and saw the site where KISS´ old venue The Daisy used to stand (sadly only a car park today...have some pics if anyone is interested), I had a coffee and a bagel at Poppy´s (great place with wonderful staff) and I walked around admiring the silence and ranquility of the place. Pretty close to Manhattan, but very far from it too if you get my drift. I felt almost like I was walking on the streets where the first Halloweenmovie takes place... Very cool. Also, the Halloweendecorations were at times absolutely thrilling, one house very close to 108/112 Ocean Ave was really intense, with a BIG spider climbing upwards on the front of the house, towards the attic. Thrilling!

I took 5 pics of ´our´ house, 3 from the front and two from the other side of the river. All are posted below, they´re nothing special per se but pretty nice shots to keep as a memory. I walked down the street parallell to Ocean, turned left at S. Ireland and walked right up to the house. I stood there for a few seconds, nobody was there or in the vicinity, so I snapped a nice steady picture of the front of the house. I then walked over the street and a bit to the left (there was actually a car outside the house in the street!) and took a pic of the side of the house. Not wanting to be a nuisance I then started walking up Ocean Ave, but turned and went back to get one last shot (heck, I was really alone...). I´m glad I did since it´s my favourite of the lot.

Funny note, just as I arrived at the house a deliverytruck went buy. Both guys in the truck looked with VERY big eyes at the house as they drove by in a very slow pace :) So I guess it´s not just tourists, eh?

The two pics from the other side of the water are definitely nothing special, I had such a nice time and the weather was so good I just took a stroll over the bridge and down the street to see if I saw anything at all, and when I did see the house I snapped a couple of pics there too. Take them for what they are. While walking back to the train I walked past the Blue T pizza place of course, bit I wasn´t really in a pizzamode at 10 AM so that´ll have to wait until next time :)

Again, I really did love the town and if I get the chance to come back to NY I will definitely go back to Amityville. I actually called my girlfriend and said "honey, we have to move to the US" :) She didn´t understand why. Good on her, I guess ;)

Enjoy the pics everyone. I enjoyed taking them. (I couldn´t show the images in the post, they were too big. Sorry for that, but just click the url´s and they´re there.)

Good shots there! You can especially see how the Ireland's boathouse dwarfs the 108's tiny 'bungalow' style boathouse....and Ireland's is getting a fresh coat of paint.

also notice the tree next to 108 (before) is absolutely a giant (ahem) and would consider removing it *before* a gale comes and the tree removes 108......scary :naughty:

*are the sunroom blinds ALL closed???*

Hey Tolvis,

From one demented KISS fan to another I say congrats on finally getting to Amityville. I fly out from Australia on the 12th March bound for New York on a pilgramage to most of the KISS sites. I will be doing the Amityville part on the 16th. It would be great if you could post a pic of the Daisy (carpark). If only we could go back to 1973 eh?

Did you see any other Kiss sites while over there? :D

Shane: I visited the sites of the Daisy, the Coventry, Fillmore east, Palladium/Academy of music (stayed almost next to it), Hotel diplomat, and also the loft, "Dressed to kill"-corner, the Record plant, the original "The Elder"-door, the Beacon Theatre, Electric Lady, 54 Bleecker Street and a couple more places. I also got to spend an entire afternoon with Lydia Criss who guided me around the upper west side, showing where Gene and Ace used to live (among other places). She was really nice!

Here is 124 Broadway where the Daisy used to stand..ah, those were the days...

Great stuff Tolvis. I am so envious. How did you get to spend the afternoon with Lydia? I have emailed her a couple of times and she seems great. Did you just email her and ask her to show you around?

shane: I know her a little bit. I´m a writer for the Swedish KISS Army magazine and website, and a couple of years back we did quite a big thing about her and her book, and I interviewed her while I was in NY to see Paul Stanley at Irving Plaza. We kept in touch over the years, just a bit, and met up again when i returned to NY. Very nice lady.

Hi Tolvis - found your post while searching The Daisy - my name is Richie, and my parents were the owners. I had never seen a photo of the club "not there anymore" - how depressing. I played there with my bands, I bartended there, cleaned the place, put hundreds of eggcrates on the ceiling to cut down on the echo. The building in the picture was the original drafting school - the Bergers owned it - they were the landlords - they also owned the building in the back of The Daisy parking lot. The Daisy was 2 store fronts - formally a drug store. And attached to that on the south side was a barber shop - a small strip center. I saw Kiss there numerous times, Billy Joel played there after The Hassles - as Attilla and with another band El Primo. A number of other local and successful band people played there. My parents were both characters. My dad was the club owner that could have been right out of the movie "Spinal Tap". Do you have any pictures of the original Daisy? I was so "in" it then, I never really shot pictures - we have some, but any would be sooo welcome. My mom also owned the record store in Farmingdale LI - from 1962-1975. Thanks for the memories.

Great pics Alex! I have seen them before I remember now..

I´m planning on going to Amityville next year or so. Cathing up on both the house and some Kiss sites along the way. (yeah I´m a Kiss fanatic too) :P

In case if you meet up with the former owner Brian Wilson, tell him that you are the "Swede Guy", not the "Swiss Guy".

haha I will :D

And BTW , that´s anothing mind blowing thing for me.... One of my musical heroes is... Brian Wilson (of The Beach Boys)..
My jaw dropped when I read here on the forum a couple of days ago that someone by the same name had been living in the house..
