I think he's using these photos in an attempt to show the audience "Look, I have these exclusive pictures, which shows I really did my job and researched this case, and that I know what I'm talking about."
Or maybe he's just a ghoul, who loves looking at photos of car accidents and wartime atrocities and thinks others like that stuff as well.
One of the things that always throws me about Ryan's trailer is the upbeat music playing in the bar when Ronnie rushes in to tell everyone that his family is dead. As used in the trailer, this music gives the audience an emotional cue which prepares them for something like a comic montage from a buddy film. And then you are hit in the face with Ronnie shouting that his parents are dead. Totally inappropriate...
