The neighbors themselves privately admitted they feared the Defeo family because they had a connection to the mafia.
Privately admitted to who?
They tried to keep a secret by confessing to friends and family instead of making it public although it was quiet obvious that they feared the Defeo's.

I think he was after names, not what appears to be more hearsay.

Exactly. They admitted to friends and family, which no one knows the names of.

If they didn't make it public...how do you know about it?

I'd still like to hear the second part of your story--
I am gonna write another story pretty soon about the experience of my grandpa's great friend. It will involve his perspective of the Defeo murders which took place nearly a year later.

I know... a lot of people do. But to be honest, there isn't anything really interesting in it. I contacted my grandpa's friend, and he told me that had a general conversation with Louise Defeo a few months before the murders. That's pretty much it. He saw the bodies being taken out of the house. He also attended the Defeo funeral before moving to Brooklyn.
