911 Call

Post by suffolk » Wed Dec 14, 2005 7:21 pm

Below is a quote from the original 911 Call of the DeFeo Murders:

Operator: This is Suffolk County Police. May I help you?"
Man: "We have a shooting here. Uh, DeFeo."

Operator: "Anybody hurt?"
Man: "Yeah, it's uh, uh -- everybody's dead."

Here is a complete transcript:
http://truelegends.info/amityville/call.htm

It makes a good read because it gives a realistic portrayal of the area that the house is in.

You just have to love how the operator and the officer handle that call. But then I guess the man who called probably wasn't all that calm and probably wasn't making much sense.

It was Joe Yeswit I believe in AH2005 that was the actual recording at the beginning...
"It happened so quick. I mean, it was boom, boom, boom. From the first killing to the last, it never took any longer than seven seconds,
it would be alot, that would have been alot. Seven seconds." - Ronald J. DeFeo Jr.

YESWIT. "How do you spell that?"
Who gives a sh*t, there's four dead bodies and you wanna know how to spell my name, work it out yourself!!!!
Hicks: What was that bump?
Johnnie: Oh sh*t, man, we just ran over a car. We just squashed a car!
Hicks: What kind of car?
Johnnie: A Volkswagen. A f*cking beetle!
Hicks: Oh, no. We squashed a beetle.

Well, the 911 operator would need to know how to spell it for the reports on the whole incident as well as get all of the info that they can so that when emergency personel are dispatched, they can be better prepared for what they are going to.

Granted, I can understand not understanding that all at the time of placing the call. A year ago, my home was broken into, and the five minutes I was on the phone with the police was the longest five minutes ever. I'm certain I was probably hysterical in trying to get info to the 911 operator.

Yikes, Kevin! I hope everyone was OK and nothing taken! I have suffered break-ins too when I lived in Atlanta. It is the weirdest thing to walk around your house realizing some stranger -- or worse yet some fiend who might not want to just steal -- has been walking around your own home, poking into things. These guys could have taken jewelry or any other thing of value in the home (three peeps shared the home, so there was plenty there) but they went straight for my Technics turntables. Vintage 1200's. It was like being ... violated. Sorry to hear of your ordeal.

I read the transcript in High Hopes, by Gerard Sullivan and Harvey Aronson. It showed the entire transcript.

I also read an excerpt on Crime Library.com ( http://www.crimelibrary.com/ ).

Very interesting.

These people have a duty to perform and part of it is to get as much information as possible within a limited time frame.

No sense picking on people for doing their job.

Hi Nathan,

Although there is logic in stating the obvious, there is still a duty to gather information from the person on the other end of the phone. If you listen to similar transcripts or listen to recorded 911 calls, you will notice the operator does the same thing.

I've seen all the Omen movies. I liked Sam Neill in The Final Conflict, aka Omen III. I am not sure what the reviews were at the time but I believe it didn't get a good response.

Somewhere in the last few years, Ive heard the actual recording of that call. For the life of me I cant remember where, but the caller is breathing real heavy, I remember that much.
