TV Alert

The following is a list of upcoming TV programs dealing with the DeFeo murders and/or Amityville Haunting:

Upcoming Films & Fiction

Amityville 1992: It's About Time (1992) An architect finds an antique clock in the remains of an old Amityville house (guess) and brings it home for his family to enjoy. To everyone's surprise, disaster follows. This is the 6th Amityville movie and the 2nd to be released "direct to video" (after the previous sequels failed to even approach the wild success of the original). Airs Oct 30 & 31, on The TV Guide Network.

Upcoming Documentaries

Is It Real? Hauntings (2006) Featuring brief overviews of the Amityville case as it's base, this special spends most of its time exploring a haunted music club in Kentucky and a haunted castle in England. In the short time devoted to Amityville, we are given a load of misinformation. Click here to discuss this program. Airs Oct 30 on The National Geographic Channel.

20 Most Horrifying Hollywood Murders (2006) The premise of this special is on celebrity murders, but for some reason they count the DeFeo massacre as #15 on their list -- I guess because the incident was part of the story of the Hollywood movie The Amityville Horror. Kind of a stretch calling it a "Hollywood murder," but whatever. This sloppy program (which seems to be repeated constantly) briefly shows Ric Osuna's silly "7th Body" and "bloody shoes" photos, as if they really came from the DeFeo crime scene. Airs Oct 31 on The E Channel.

Amityville: The Final Testament (2010) New 1-hour documentary apparently dealing more with the DeFeo murders and featuring a new interview with Ronnie DeFeo. An early description from Time-Warner reads: Ronald DeFeo Jr., who was convicted of killing his entire family 35 years ago in an incident that inspired The Amityville Horror is now terminally ill and ready to sit for a final, definitive interview to answer the many questions still surrounding this case. Click here to discuss this program. Premieres Oct 31 on A&E.

The Real Story: The Amityville Horror (2008) One of the better documentaries on the subject. Fairly well-balanced, but still contains a few factual errors (even one from Bill Weber, saying both DeFeo sisters were murdered on the 3rd floor). Notable moments include the interview with Patrick O'Reilly (a family friend who denies reports of Ronald DeFeo Sr being an abusive father), Weber talking about how the Lutzes came to him with their story, and perhaps the final interview with Hans Holzer on the subject. Originally aired in the UK as "The True Story," this is slightly re-edited and re-worked for American television. Click here to discuss this program. Airs Oct 31 on The Smithsonian Channel.
