Rick Moran is best known in the field of Unexplained Phenomenon as the investigator who debunked Jay Anson’s famous book, The Amityville Horror, but that is not the whole story.

Rick began his journalism career at the age of 14, when he photographed his first major fire and sold it to a New York newspaper. After graduating from high school he went joined the “family business,” namely the New York City Police Department.

While a police officer, Rick freelanced for a number of newspapers in New York and later became a principal writer for Psychic World magazine, travelling the country on his days off, covering assignments for CBS' Popular Magazine Group.

In 2006, Rick decided that he would start a paranormal research and field investigation group in Texas and received permission from earlier members of ASUP to continue to use their name.

Oh well... What is it with Amityville and everyone just making up their own BS about it? The Warrens, Holzer and Rick Moran all just seem to make up whatever they please and push it off on the public as fact.

I was trying to call back in, so I missed a good portion of the show. A podcast of it should be up in the iTunes store fairly soon, so when I get a chance I'll listen to it and list all the crap parts.

One that I remember off-hand was him claiming to have been inside the DeFeo house on the day after the murders. He said he knew the cop guarding the house, and this guy supposedly said, "Hey Rick, you wanna come in and have a look?"

Funny how Rick never mentioned this in his 1978 FATE article, or anywhere else. Previously he claimed that he went inside the house back when the Cromartys lived there.

I've started to listen on iTunes... here are some thoughts. After a while I strated putting the time in minutes next to each comment:

- Holzer was never at the original investigation.

- Ronnie was watching Castle Keep on the same floor as the bedrooms (except Dawns) and not in the "living room" as Moran states, so he would have have the shots all around him (if Dawn were shooting).

- Dawn had powder burns on her right hand?

- 18mins Moran spoke to Ronnie? When was this?

- 25mins Dan explains Father Pecoraro was not Kathy's psychiatrist and gets a weary "okay..." response from Moran. Lol, and this is a guy who complains facts get "bent out of shape"? - Moran then says he spoke to George on a TV show "before he died" - this never happened.

- 32mins Do any of the available crime photos show lights from a "radio tower out of the bedroom windows?" plus you would have thought Moran would have more insight into how the Lutz/Weber/Hoffman meetings went down (being a friend of Hoffman's) than parroting Weber's tired "they made it up off the crime pics over wine" lines.

- 37mins Father Ray's car accident - in the middle of a violent storm?

- Neighbours were willing to sign affidavits saying the Lutzes were not there all the time?

- Jay Anson NEVER worked on the Exorcist screenplay! Wiliam Peter Blatty wrote it alone from his novel. Anson was involved in the making-of documentary for Professional Films - he likely wrote the script that 10 minute piece.

I've seen short splices of interviews, but this is the first time I'm actually hearing him in an extended interview.

I'm about 1/4 to 1/3 of the way through right now. The guy's quite a storyteller. "In regular contact with Ronnie DeFeo"? "Ronnie was a gun/firearms instructor"? - where the hell does he pull this stuff out of?

The above so far have tempted me to call him by the name of Rick Moron.

At this point, I'm listening for pure entertainment rather than to glean a fact or two.....

BRAVO, Dan! I heardz ya! You rocked and you had your facts at hand. I feel you were too conveniently disconnected.

This blowhard put me FAST to sleep on my couch and I had an assignment paper to do for class! Amazing how he became an authority, mind you, "credible authority" with so many of the facts askew. I think I threw up in my mouth a lot when he mentioned going back to the house the next morning taking pictures and a police officer welcomed him into the crime scene to "take a look around". His questionable expertise seems to be in hindsight alone and then mired with mistruths for the gaps in his story telling. I completely lost interest along the conversation of something about chasing pigs or something for hunting purposes. Also, his logistics are completely inaccurate. The Amityville Sound has NEVER been referred to as the Amityville River, to name one. His mention of Father Pecararo's automobile hood opening opposite of the normal way cars' hoods open on the Van Wyck appeared contrived and lifted from the film to further gas the listeners of his "expertise".

The man exhausts me and I am thankful his format is limited to such venues as he acquires. He would be completely blown out of the water if he presented this information to a mainstream media outlet. On top of which, if his information is so credible, why doesn't he or hasn't he reached out to his contacts at CBS after all these years?? Why does he continue to bolster Butch as a "gun safety expert (WTF'ityF)??? Mind you, going so far as to physically chastise a buddy for climbing over a stone wall during a hunting trip with the buddy's weapon improperly secured.....Good GOD almighty!

One or the other, Moran - either you're in or you're out.

My bet is the man's ass is severely perforated from sitting on the fence, waiting for what kind of interview team comes along before he'll lean to one side or the other.

Chrissakes, this guy passes himself off as an expert, yet I get infinitely more intelligent and informed opinions, views and discussion right here - it's the main thing that tuned me on to the boards here a yeaf and a half ago, though I may not participate as often as I like.

Thanks. I wasn't gonna call-in at first because I am just getting over a cold, and yesterday I was still totally congested -- and the drawback of that is I can't think as quickly and I lose focus. So I was worried Rick might say something and I might freeze up due to my cold. But luckily that didn't happen.

They were having genuine problems with the whole system yesterday, finally getting the show to start 45 minutes late (after being unable to login to the Blogtalk system. And I think that affects their phones. The call-in line is in America, and this particular show is based in the UK, so it seems the phone-in line is controlled by the Blogtalk network.

As they were trying to connect me, I heard them say they couldn't hear me, so I kept repeating "hello? Helloooooo! I'm heeeeere!" I'm glad that part didn't make it on the air.

When I got disconnected, I could still hear all of them just fine, and once again I started chanting "hello." At that time I also heard heavy breathing -- not "sexy" breathing, but sounded like someone with breathing problems with his phone way too close to his face. So who knows.

But yeah, I would really love to debate Rick in some manner where we both can be heard at the same volume and one of us isn't at risk of being cut off. I'll even travel to Texas if need be (I'll hire Kat as security).

Exactly! That's totally the impression I get. I think he makes up things (like the DEA agent seeing Dawn leaving the house after the murders) to support his theories -- possibly feeling that the end justifies the means. That is simply unexcusable for someone calling themself an investigator.

Let me just transcribe that. In a 2007 interview with Rick Wood, Moran said, "I'm always being asked to do radio and TV shows. The number of people involved in the original Amityville hoax is quickly dwindling by natural selection. And somebody made a joke, oh I guess it was about 10 years ago, they said, uh, 'When is this debate ever gonna end?' I said, 'When the last person from one side or the other drops dead.'

And just yesterday Rick changed that around, saying, "George told a lot of stories. Okay? And before George died, I asked him on a talk show, 'George, when will it end?' And his answer was, 'Whoever dies last wins.'

So here is a pretty clear cut example of Moran's revisionism in progress. Ya know, Moran reminds me of Green Acres' Mr Haney. In lots of ways.
